At Daytona State College, the new Gale Lemerand Student Center integrates campus retail opportunities, student life, and a grand campus entrance through a series of plazas, walkways, and covered porticos. A key driver of form included a historical campus plat from the mid-20th century which offers a contextual orientation that reconciles awkward building orientations throughout the campus. The twisting of various axial orientations created regional symmetries making the student center the campus hub. The campus “center” functions as a series of exterior gathering spaces supporting study, student activities, artwork and the back drop of a unforgettable campus arrival.
